One country, seven seasons

The United States is easier to plan as a set of regions with different seasons than as a single destination: mountain resorts in winter and summer, the northern coasts in summer, the desert Southwest in the cooler months, and Florida and Hawaii as winter-sun options. Check NOAA climate information and each property's calendar for the dates you have in mind.

What follows is a regional planning guide. Indicative nightly rates vary by property and date; use individual listings and partner quotes rather than treating regional estimates as confirmed prices.

The regions at a glance

The Mountain West

Aspen and Jackson Hole offer different mountain stays. Aspen is a town with four ski areas nearby and a summer events programme. Jackson Hole sits beside Grand Teton National Park, with Yellowstone to the north; the National Park Service publishes seasonal road and facility openings.

Both have a winter ski season and a summer season. Some services reduce in the spring and autumn between them, so check which lifts, roads and restaurants are open for your dates. We don't publish regional price comparisons; compare live quotes.

The coasts

Many visitors plan the central California coast, from Big Sur to Santa Barbara, between late spring and autumn. Coastal fog is common in early summer, and winter storms can close sections of Highway 1, so check Caltrans and NOAA before travelling.

Nantucket and the Hamptons have a short summer season, broadly Memorial Day to Labor Day. June and September fall either side of it; we don't have a market-wide price sample, so compare quotes for your dates.

The warm refuges

The desert Southwest — Scottsdale, Santa Fe and Utah's canyon country — is often planned from autumn to spring, when daytime temperatures are lower than in summer. Utah's parks can bring winter snow and road closures; check NPS conditions for each park.

Florida, from Palm Beach to the Keys, is a winter-sun option; the Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Hawaii can be visited year-round, with a wetter winter season on many windward coasts. The Lowcountry — Charleston and Sea Island — is often planned for spring and autumn.

How to plan the year

• Winter (December–March)

  Ski in Aspen or Jackson Hole, or look at Florida, the desert Southwest or Hawaii. Check property calendars for festive weeks early; we don't have a measured booking window.

• Spring (April–June)

  Spring in the Lowcountry and the desert, then early summer on the California coast. Mountain resorts sit between ski and summer seasons, with some services closed.

• Summer (July–September)

  Summer season in New England and the Mountain West, and on the Pacific coast. Check availability early for peak weeks; deadlines vary by property.

• Autumn (October–November)

  Autumn in the desert and the Lowcountry, fall colour in the mountains, and the end of the hurricane season in Florida on 30 November.
