Mexico's safety conditions vary by state, route and time. The US State Department publishes state-level advice; read the latest notice for your destination and any areas you will transit. A resort location does not remove security risks.
This guide covers Los Cabos, Punta Mita, the Costalegre, the Riviera Maya and selected colonial cities. Check transport arrangements, local conditions and medical access for each part of your itinerary before booking.
How the advisories actually work
US advice includes state-by-state notices alongside national guidance, with risk indicators including crime, kidnapping and terrorism. Find the latest notice for your destination and transit states; levels and restrictions can change. For major events such as the 2026 World Cup, check current US Embassy security notices too.
UK FCDO advice checked 10 October 2026 advises against all but essential travel to multiple areas, including parts of Baja California, Chihuahua, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas, with route-specific exceptions. The UK map and exceptions are not the same as US state-level advisory ratings. Read the live UK notice for each destination and transit route before booking and again before departure.

The habits that make it easy
Experienced Mexico travellers run on a short list of habits. Transport comes through the villa — airport car, day-trip driver, evening car to dinner — which removes the one decision point that matters. Day trips go with guides the villa knows. The swim is where the staff swim. Water is bottled. And at night, the movement is between villa and destination by arranged car rather than on foot in unfamiliar streets.
None of this is burdensome, and most of it is simply what a staffed villa does by default. The result is a trip that feels effortless because the friction was engineered out at the planning stage — which is, not coincidentally, the entire argument for the staffed villa over the hotel room in Mexico.
When to go
Many travellers choose the drier months from November to April, though conditions vary by coast and year. Check current forecasts and seasonal sargassum updates for Caribbean beaches.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November; the eastern Pacific season starts on 15 May. Check official storm alerts and your accommodation's cancellation and evacuation plans; flexible terms do not remove safety risks.
