Luxury Travel in Aspen: Season, Houses and Real Costs
Four mountains, one very small town, and the most expensive fortnight in American travel. What an Aspen house costs by season, when the value actually is, and why summer may be the better trip.
The season decides the price, not the house
Aspen's rate curve is the steepest in American travel. The same house that lets for USD 1,800 a night in early December will ask USD 12,000 over New Year, and it will be taken. Everything between those poles is a question of which week you choose, not which property.
Four mountains share one lift ticket: Ajax above the town for steep intermediate skiing, Highlands for the bowl, Buttermilk for beginners and the park, and Snowmass for sheer size and for families who want ski-in ski-out over walkable streets.

Summer is the trip nobody books
From June to September Aspen costs a third of its winter self and arguably gives more: hiking on the Maroon Bells trails, the Music Festival running most of the summer, road cycling over Independence Pass, and evenings cool enough for a fire. If the skiing is not the point, this is when to come.
- Book the festive fortnight twelve months ahead; nine is already late.
- Give the first day at 2,400 metres to doing very little.
- Winter tyres or all-wheel drive between November and April, without exception.
- Snowmass for ski-in ski-out with children; the town for everything else.
- Independence Pass closes from roughly November to late May — the winter drive is the long way round.
