Luxury Travel in Jackson Hole: Season, Lodges and Real Costs
Steep skiing, two national parks at the end of the road, and a valley that empties in the shoulder months. What a Jackson lodge costs by season, and which of the four bases is right for your week.
Two seasons, two entirely different trips
Jackson runs two peaks. Winter is the ski trip — the steepest lift-served terrain in the United States, the tram, and a valley floor that stays cold and clear. Summer is the parks trip — Grand Teton at the edge of town and Yellowstone two hours north — and it is busier than the ski season, not less.
Between them sit the mud seasons: late April to May, and late October to November. The valley half-empties, rates fall by half, and if you want the Tetons to yourself with a good house at a fair price, that is when.

The houses we hold, and the town guide:
Where to base the week
Teton Village
At the base of the tram. Ski-in ski-out, a handful of restaurants, and a twenty-five minute drive from town. The right choice if the mountain is the trip.
The town of Jackson
The square, the restaurants and the galleries, with a shuttle or a drive to the slopes. Better for a mixed week, and much better for non-skiers in the party.
Wilson and the west bank
Quiet ranch properties between the town and the village, with the best views back at the Teton range. Needs a car; rewards one.
North toward the park
Houses on the Gros Ventre and Moose roads, a few minutes from the Grand Teton entrance. The summer choice, and the one where the wildlife comes to you.
- Bear spray on every trail from spring through autumn, carried where you can reach it.
- A hundred yards from bears and wolves, twenty-five from bison, elk and moose.
- All-wheel drive December to March; the pass roads close without much warning.
- Book the festive fortnight and the first two weeks of July a year ahead.
- One easy day at 1,900 metres before the tram or the trails.

Frequently asked questions
- What does a lodge in Jackson Hole cost per night?
- About USD 1,200 to 2,600 in early December, USD 2,000 to 4,500 in peak snow, USD 1,800 to 4,000 in park summer, and USD 4,000 to 9,000 over the festive fortnight. The shoulder months fall to USD 900.
- Should I stay in Teton Village or the town of Jackson?
- Teton Village if the skiing is the trip — it is at the base of the tram. The town of Jackson if the party is mixed, or if restaurants, galleries and the square matter as much as the mountain.
- When is the best time to visit Jackson Hole?
- January and February for snow, mid-June to September for the parks, and late April to May or late October to November for value and near-empty trails. Summer is the busier of the two peaks.
- Is Jackson Hole safe?
- Very. Crime is negligible. The real risks are wildlife distance, winter driving and altitude — keep a hundred yards from bears, carry bear spray on trails, and give yourself an easy first day.
