What a luxury chalet in France costs
France holds more staffed luxury chalet stock than any other country in the Alps, and the spread between resorts is wider than most people expect. The same eight-bedroom brief prices at three times more in Courchevel 1850 than in the Chamonix valley, and the week you choose moves it again by a factor of two to three.
Read the table as a planning band for a fully staffed six- to eight-bedroom house. Smaller chalets, self-catered lets and shoulder-season weeks sit below it; the handful of ultra-prime piste-side houses in 1850 and Val d'Isère sit well above it.

Catered, staffed and self-catered — the words mean different things
A catered chalet in France is the classic operator model: a chef and host live in, breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner are served six days a week, and the seventh is the staff day off. A fully staffed chalet adds a dedicated driver, a butler or chalet manager and, in the ultra-prime band, a spa therapist and nanny on request. A self-catered chalet is the house alone, with housekeeping and a welcome shop arranged separately.
The distinction changes the comparison entirely. A catered chalet quoted at EUR 60,000 and a private chalet in France quoted at EUR 45,000 self-catered are usually the same week once a chef, host and driver are priced back in.
- Ask whether the rate is catered, fully staffed or self-catered before comparing two houses.
- Confirm which day is the staff day off and what is left in the kitchen for it.
- Check whether wine, spirits and premium ingredients are inside the rate or billed at cost.
- Confirm the driver's hours and whether the vehicle covers airport legs or resort only.
- For a self-catered let, price a private chef separately — EUR 3,000 to 9,000 for the week.

Ski-in ski-out, hot tubs and pools — what the listings mean
Ski-in ski-out is the most stretched phrase in French chalet listings. In Courchevel 1850 the Jardin Alpin, Bellecôte and Nogentil addresses are genuinely piste-side; in Val d'Isère it applies to a narrow band under Solaise and Bellevarde; in Méribel it usually means a run home rather than a run out; and in Chamonix, where the lifts are spread down a valley, almost nothing is, and a chalet driver does the work instead.
A chalet with a hot tub is close to standard at this level in France, and an indoor pool is not. Pools appear in a small number of houses in 1850, Val d'Isère and Méribel and carry a clear premium, typically fifteen to thirty per cent over a comparable chalet with a spa and hot tub only.

Driver-served, not piste-side
Most of Chamonix, Courchevel Le Praz and the outer Méribel hamlets. Excellent houses, but the week runs on a vehicle and a five-minute transfer to the lift.
Hot tub, spa and pool
An outdoor hot tub, hammam and massage room are the French norm above USD 5,000 a night. An indoor pool narrows the shortlist sharply and moves the rate with it.

France's four core luxury chalet markets answer different briefs. Choose the resort on how the week is meant to run, then compare rates inside it — comparing a Chamonix rate to a Courchevel rate tells you almost nothing on its own.
Courchevel — the deepest luxury market

Méribel — the family week
Central to the Three Valleys, gentler tree-lined skiing and a large stock of traditional timber chalets. Strong for a multi-family group that wants ski school and a short walk to the lift.
Chamonix — value and access
An hour and a quarter from Geneva, a real town rather than a resort, the widest rate range in France and the only one of the four that works as well in August as in February.

Getting there, and what sits outside the rate
Geneva serves every French resort in this guide; Lyon and Chambéry are useful alternates for the Tarentaise, and Courchevel's altiport takes private aircraft and helicopters directly. Saturday is the changeover day across France, and Saturday road transfers in February run an hour or more longer than the quoted time.
Lift passes, ski hire, instructors, childcare, airport transfers and premium wine sit outside almost every French chalet rate, catered or staffed.
