What a Chamonix chalet costs
Chamonix is a town rather than a purpose-built resort, and the chalet stock reflects that: restored farmhouses in the hamlets, glass-walled new builds at Les Praz, and a small band of staffed ultra-prime houses above Chamonix Sud. For the same staffing you pay materially less than in Courchevel or Val d'Isère, and the trade is that the skiing is spread across separate lift areas rather than one linked domain.

Chamonix hamlets: choosing your address in the valley
Chamonix is a nineteen-kilometre valley with four practical bases. The hamlet decides which lift you ski first, how much sun the terrace gets in January, and whether you walk to dinner or drive.
Les Praz
The classic choice. Flégère lift, the Drus filling the window, a village green and two good restaurants. Sunniest of the central hamlets and the best-balanced base for a family week.
Argentière
The skiers' base at the top of the valley, at the foot of the Grands Montets. Highest, coldest and most snow-sure; quiet in the evening, and the right address if the point of the week is the mountain.
Chamonix Sud and the town centre
Walk to the Aiguille du Midi cable car, the market and the restaurants. Best for mixed groups where not everyone skis every day; the largest staffed houses sit on the slopes just above.
Les Houches
Lower, wooded and family-oriented, twelve minutes down-valley and closest to Geneva. Gentler skiing, larger gardens for the money, and reliably the best value in the valley.

Booking windows, minimums and transfers
Chamonix is the most open of the three French markets we book. Outside the festive fortnight and half-term, good staffed houses are still available four to six months out, and midweek stays of four or five nights are accepted in January and late March.
The transfer is the valley's structural advantage: Geneva is an hour and a quarter on a clear road, EUR 250 to 600 each way by private vehicle, which makes a short week or a long weekend realistic in a way it is not in the Tarentaise.
- Confirm which lift the chalet actually walks to; the valley's areas are separate.
- Ask whether the rate is catered, staffed with a chef, or self-catered with a housekeeper.
- Check the terrace aspect if you are in the valley bottom in January.
- Book a guide early for the Vallée Blanche; the best are committed months ahead.
- Price the Geneva transfer both ways, and a fallback for snow on the Route Blanche.
