Which France you are actually booking
France is not a single destination with a single season. The Riviera runs hot, crowded and expensive for six weeks and is quietly perfect for three months either side. Provence peaks with the lavender in late June and early July, then settles into a long warm autumn. Paris works in every month of the year and has no real off-season beyond a soft February. The Savoie and Haute-Savoie sell one product — snow — and price it around Christmas, New Year and the February school holidays.
Pick one climate and one rhythm per trip. The classic mistake is a fortnight split between Antibes in August and Paris in August: the first is at its most expensive and the second is at its emptiest, with half the good restaurants closed.
Where to base each trip
Côte d'Azur — Cap d'Antibes, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Saint-Tropez
Walled gardens, tenders, and the shortest walk from a private house to a good dinner anywhere in Europe. June and September give you the same sea at roughly two-thirds the August rate.
Provence and the Luberon — Gordes, Ménerbes, Bonnieux
Stone mas houses, long tables, markets and vineyards. The best half of a trip for anyone who wants space and a cook rather than a beach club.
Paris
Private apartments and the grand palace hotels. Strongest in May–June and September–October; August is quiet, warm and half-shuttered.
French Alps — Courchevel 1850, Méribel, Megève, Val d'Isère
Chalet season runs mid-December to mid-April, with a summer hiking market that almost nobody books and that prices accordingly.
Bordeaux, the Loire and Normandy
Châteaux, harvest and coast. Quiet, cool and excellent value September to November.
- Book August on the Riviera and Christmas in the Alps six to nine months out — both sell on repeat guests.
- Keep a car and driver on the coast; parking and the corniche roads are the whole difficulty of a Riviera week.
- Confirm whether a staffed rate includes the chef's food budget — in France it usually does not.
- Ask about the taxe de séjour and the summer waste-collection rules if you are in a village.
- Trains beat flights between Paris, Lyon, Avignon and Marseille; book TGV tickets the week they open.

- What is the best region of France for a luxury trip?
- The Côte d'Azur for sea and social life, Provence for staffed stone houses and food, Paris for culture in any month, and the Savoie Alps for winter. Most good two-week trips pair one southern base with Paris at either end.
- How much does a luxury villa in France cost per night?
- Indicatively USD 1,200 to 3,000 a night for a Riviera villa in shoulder season, USD 2,500 to 7,000 in high summer and USD 6,000 upwards in August at the best addresses. Provence runs roughly half the coast; alpine chalets peak hardest over Christmas and New Year.
- When is the cheapest time to visit France?
- Late January to March away from the ski resorts, and November. For good weather at a real discount, May, June, September and early October across the south.
- Do I need to speak French?
- No, but the effort matters. Open with bonjour and a word of French in shops and restaurants and the reception you get changes noticeably. English is widely spoken in Paris, on the Riviera and in the major resorts.
- Is France safe for travellers?
