Dispatch No. XII — Cap Ferret

Cap Ferret is a thin, pine-covered peninsula with the Atlantic on one side and the sheltered Bassin d'Arcachon on the other, and almost everything about a stay here follows from that geography.

The cape lies about an hour's drive west of Bordeaux and runs south between the bay and the Bay of Biscay. It is often confused with Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat on the Riviera, but the two have little in common: this is a place of oyster villages, bicycle paths and wooden cabins rather than grand hotels. Many visitors arrive without a car, taking the train to Arcachon and the short ferry across the bay.

On the bay side, oyster-farming villages such as L'Herbe and Le Canon keep their working cabins along the shore, and tasting oysters at a producer's shack is the defining local ritual. Across the water rises the Dune du Pilat, the tallest sand dune in Europe, visible from the southern tip of the peninsula.

Summer is busy and booked well ahead; late spring and early autumn are quieter, with most oyster shacks and restaurants still open. The luxury here is understated — a private house among the pines, a boat across the bay and lunch at the water's edge — which is why the peninsula has long drawn Bordeaux and Parisian families rather than resort crowds.
