What a Val d'Isère chalet costs
Val d'Isère prices below Courchevel for comparable staffing and above Chamonix for comparable size. The reason is the season: at 1,850 metres with skiing to 3,456 on the Pissaillas glacier, it opens in late November and holds cover into May, so the calendar carries more sellable weeks than any other French resort.

Val d'Isère quarters: selecting your address
The village is compact enough to walk end to end, but the four quarters ski differently and price differently. Solaise-side addresses reach the lift first in the morning; La Legettaz sits under the Bellevarde face; the old village is the social centre; Le Fornet is the quiet outlier.
Le Châtelard and the old village
Stone-built houses around the baroque church, walking distance to both the Solaise and Bellevarde lifts and to dinner. The best base for a group that wants to leave the car parked all week.
La Legettaz
Riverside, under the Bellevarde face, with true ski-in ski-out on the lower slopes and a five-minute walk into the village. The densest concentration of newer staffed chalets.
Solaise side and Le Crêt
Elevated, south-facing and quiet, with afternoon sun on the terraces and first access to the Solaise gondola. Where several of the ultra-prime builds sit.
Le Fornet
Two and a half kilometres up-valley, a hamlet with its own cable car onto the glacier side. Quietest, coldest, most snow-sure, and priced twenty to thirty per cent below the village.

Peak weeks, rebooking and transfers
Christmas, New Year and February half-term run Saturday to Saturday on a seven-night minimum and price at two to two and a half times a mid-January week. Val d'Isère's rebooking cycle is shorter than Courchevel's: eight to twelve months for the festive fortnight rather than twelve to eighteen, and prime half-term weeks usually surface again in the spring.
Geneva is roughly three hours by road at EUR 500 to 1,300 each way; Chambéry and Lyon are alternatives, and a helicopter leg into the Val d'Isère helipad runs EUR 3,500 to 7,500. The Bourg-Saint-Maurice train, twenty-five minutes below the resort, is the underrated arrival for a festive Saturday.
- Ask whether the chalet skis out on the Bellevarde or Solaise side; it changes your morning.
- For early December or April, confirm which lifts are actually running.
- Agree the chef's days off and the driver's hours before arrival.
- Compare a Christmas-only week against the full fortnight before committing.
