The short answer

If a single month has to work across Japan, Thailand and Indonesia, take November. Japan is in autumn colour, Thailand has just entered its cool dry season and Bali is at the tail of the dry months. Late October runs it close.

Otherwise, split the year: Japan in spring and autumn, Thailand between November and February, Bali between April and October. The calendar below is the planning spine.

How to use the calendar

  • Pick the month, then the country

Asia punishes the reverse order. A February trip belongs in Thailand; an April trip belongs in Japan; an August trip belongs in Bali.

  • Shoulder weeks are the value

Late October, early December and June in Japan all deliver the destination at a fraction of peak rates with a fraction of the crowds.

  • Rain is not a cancellation

Green-season Thailand and wet-season Bali get heavy afternoon rain, not week-long grey. Both are green, cheap and quiet in those months.

  • Mind the festivals

Golden Week and Obon in Japan, Songkran in Thailand and Nyepi in Bali all move rates and close things — know them before booking.

  • November and late October are the only reliable all-region windows.
  • Book Japanese blossom and November weeks six to twelve months ahead.
  • Bali's festive fortnight from 20 December carries minimum stays and peak rates.
  • Thailand's April is the hottest month of the year and Songkran shuts parts of the city for days.
  • Typhoon season in Japan runs August to October — keep the first and last nights flexible.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Asia?
November. Japan is in autumn colour, Thailand has entered its cool dry season and Bali is at the end of its dry months — the only period that works well across all three. Late October is close behind.
When is the rainy season in Southeast Asia?
Bangkok's green season runs June to October, wettest in September. Bali's wet season runs November to March. Both bring heavy afternoon rain rather than all-day grey, and both carry the lowest rates of the year.
What is the worst time to visit Asia?
April in Thailand is the hottest month of the year, and June to mid-July is Japan's rainy season. Neither ruins a trip, but both are easy to plan around if the dates are flexible.
When should I visit Japan versus Thailand?
Japan in late March to April or November; Thailand from November to February. A single trip taking both works best in November, when the two seasons briefly overlap.
When is Bali at its best?
April to October, the dry season, with June and September the sweet spots for good weather without July and August crowds and rates.
