The short version
Korea has four seasons that actually behave like seasons. Spring is short and spectacular, with blossom moving north from Busan in late March to Seoul in early April. Summer is hot, humid and includes the jangma monsoon and a typhoon tail. Autumn is the reason to go: eight weeks of dry, clear, cool weather and the best foliage in Asia. Winter is cold, bright and dry, with reliable skiing in Gangwon.
October is the month to book, and it books early. Chuseok, the harvest holiday in September or October, moves the whole country for several days.

Booking windows that actually matter
- Cherry blossom in Seoul, roughly the first ten days of April: book four months out; the forecast date shifts by a week either way each year.
- Peak foliage in mid-October: four months for a hanok stay or a suite in Jongno.
- Chuseok and Seollal: domestic travel is enormous and trains sell out the day bookings open.
- Jeju in August: Korean families take the island; book three months ahead or go in May or October instead.
- Ski weeks in Pyeongchang over New Year: three to four months.

- What is the best month to visit South Korea?
- October. It is dry, clear and cool, the autumn colour peaks mid-month, and the whole country is comfortable to walk. Late April and May are the spring equivalent.
- When is cherry blossom season in Korea?
- Late March in Busan and Jeju, and roughly the first ten days of April in Seoul. The peak lasts about a week and shifts year to year with spring temperatures.
- When is the rainy season in South Korea?
- The jangma monsoon runs from late June to late July, followed by a hot, humid August with occasional typhoons on the south coast.
- Is winter a good time to visit Korea?
- Yes, if you accept the cold. It is dry and bright, the cities are cheap, the food is at its best, and the Gangwon ski resorts run from December to early March.
