The short version
Thailand has two coasts on opposite clocks. The Andaman side — Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi — is dry and calm from November to April and wet from May to October. The Gulf islands, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, run late: their worst month is November, and they stay usable through much of the western monsoon. Bangkok is a year-round city, coolest and driest from December to February and punishing in April.
The connoisseur's months are December and January for the Andaman coast, and February to April or July to September for the Gulf. Rates peak over Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year and fall hardest in May, June and September.

Booking windows that actually matter
- Christmas and New Year on the Andaman coast: book by March. The best villas rebook with last year's guests before they ever list.
- Chinese New Year: confirm six months out; the date moves between late January and mid-February.
- Songkran, 13-15 April: book flights and cars early, and expect closed offices for the better part of a week.
- July and August in the Gulf islands: three months, because European families move there when the Andaman side turns.
- Green-season villa weeks in May, June and September: three to six weeks is usually enough, and rates run 40-55 per cent below the festive fortnight.

- What is the best month to visit Thailand?
- January. The whole country is dry and cool by Thai standards, the Andaman sea is flat, and the festive surcharge has dropped away after the first week.
- When is monsoon season in Thailand?
- The southwest monsoon runs roughly May to October and hits the Andaman coast hardest. The Gulf islands run on a different clock, with their wettest weeks in November and early December.
- Is Phuket or Koh Samui better in July?
- Koh Samui. July sits inside the Andaman monsoon but is one of the driest, brightest stretches in the Gulf, so the islands off Surat Thani are the better bet.
- What is the cheapest time to rent a villa in Thailand?
- September, then May and June. Nightly rates on the Andaman coast fall 40-55 per cent below the festive peak, with rain arriving in bursts rather than all day.
