Luxury Travel in Asia: The Cities and Islands Worth the Flight
Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Bangkok and Bali — five very different arguments for the long haul. What each costs, when each is at its best, and how to build a fortnight that uses all of them.
Five destinations, five different trips
Asia is not one destination and it does not price like one. Japan sells craft, order and seasonality; Thailand sells service and value at a level nowhere else matches; Bali sells the private villa with staff, which is the product this Collection was built around. A good Asian fortnight usually takes two of the three and resists the temptation to take all of them.
The table is the shortest honest summary of what each city or island is for.
| Base | What it is for | Best months | Indicative nightly rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo | Food, design, energy, shopping | Late Mar–Apr, Nov | USD 600 – 4,500 |
| Kyoto | Temples, machiya houses, craft | Apr, mid–late Nov | USD 700 – 5,000 |
| Osaka | Food first, day trips to Nara and Koya | Mar–May, Oct–Nov | USD 450 – 2,500 |
| Bangkok | Service, river hotels, tailoring, spas | Nov–Feb | USD 400 – 3,000 |
| Bali | Private staffed villas, sea and rice terrace | Apr–Oct | USD 500 – 6,000 |
How to build the trip
The classic Japan fortnight
Four nights Tokyo, two Hakone, four Kyoto with Nara and Osaka as day trips, two Tokyo again before the flight. Works best in April and November.
Japan and Bali, three weeks
Ten nights in Japan in the dry shoulder, then a direct hop south to a staffed villa in Bali for the second half. Two very different kinds of rest in one trip.
Bangkok and the islands
Three nights on the Chao Phraya, then Phuket or Koh Samui. The strongest value trip in Asia between November and February.
The food fortnight
Tokyo, Osaka and Bangkok — three of the best eating cities on earth, linked by short flights, with a spa week in Bali or Hakone to recover.
- Put Japan in spring or autumn and Thailand in the northern winter; the two seasons dovetail neatly.
- Bali runs dry April to October and festive rates apply from 20 December to early January.
- Internal flights in Asia are cheap and frequent — do not overland long distances to save money.
- Book Japanese restaurants and ryokan before flights; they hold the longest lead times of anything on the trip.
- Allow a recovery night at each end; the time difference from the US costs a day in each direction.
Where the value sits
Bangkok and Osaka deliver the most for the money in the region: five-star service and world-class food at a third of European rates. Bali's villa market is the best-value private-staff product anywhere on earth — a chef, a housekeeper and a driver come with the house rather than as extras.
Japan's cities look expensive at first glance and are not: the top rooms in Tokyo cost less than their equivalents in New York or London, and January and February rates run a third below the spring peak.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best time to visit Asia?
- It depends on the country. Japan is best in late March to April and November, Thailand from November to February, and Bali from April to October. October and November are the only months that work well across all three.
- Which Asian city is best for a first luxury trip?
- Tokyo, paired with Kyoto. Together they cover food, design, temples and craft with the best transport system in the world between them. Bangkok and Bali suit travellers who want service and rest over sightseeing.
- How much does a luxury trip to Asia cost per night?
- Indicatively USD 400 to 900 per night in Bangkok and Osaka, USD 600 to 1,800 in Tokyo and Kyoto, and USD 500 to 3,000 for a staffed private villa in Bali, rising at festive and blossom peaks.
- How long should an Asia trip be?
- Twelve to eighteen nights across two or three bases. Less than ten nights makes the long flights hard to justify; more than three bases turns the trip into logistics.
- Can you combine Japan and Bali in one trip?
- Yes, and it is one of the best pairings in travel: ten nights of cities and temples followed by a week in a staffed villa. Direct flights run from Tokyo to Denpasar in around seven hours.
Editorial note & limitations
Rates and seasonal conditions are indicative planning figures assembled from official tourism data and prime-market research in September 2026, not quotations. Collection inventory in Asia is currently concentrated in Bali; Japan and Thailand coverage is editorial and will connect to the Collection as houses join.
