Eight cities, eight different holidays

A European city break is not one product. Paris, London and Edinburgh are walking cities you take at any time of year; Venice and Santorini are seasonal and best in the shoulders; Milan is a business capital with a lakes hinterland; Barcelona is a Mediterranean capital with a beach attached; Istanbul is two continents and a strait, with two near-perfect windows a year.

What they share is this: in all eight, a whole private apartment or house beats a hotel room once you pass three nights, and in all eight the good stock is finite and taken early for a handful of fixed weeks each year.

How to book

  • Fix the fixed weeks first: Wimbledon, Chelsea, Frieze, Salone del Mobile, the fashion weeks, Carnevale, the Venice Film Festival, the Edinburgh Festival and Hogmanay all need nine to twelve months.
  • For everything else, three to five months secures a good address in May, June, September and October.
  • Take four nights or more in one city rather than two nights in two — the travel days cost more than they return.
  • Pair a city with its hinterland: London with the Cotswolds, Milan with Como, Barcelona with the Costa Brava, Istanbul with the Princes' Islands, Edinburgh with the Highlands.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best European city for a luxury break?
Paris, for the breadth of what it offers and because it works in every month of the year. Venice and Santorini are more spectacular but strongly seasonal; Edinburgh and Barcelona give the most space for the money.
What is the best month for a European city break?
May–June and September–early October. Both give warm weather, long light and rates well below the July–August peak, and both sit outside the school holidays in most markets.
How much does a private apartment cost in a European capital?
Broadly USD 500 to 1,200 a night for two bedrooms in a prime central quarter, USD 1,500 to 3,000 for four bedrooms with outdoor space, and USD 3,000 upwards for a staffed townhouse or a palazzo floor.
Is an apartment better than a hotel for a city break?
Past three nights, and for any group of four or more, generally yes: more space, a kitchen, a neighbourhood and a lower nightly cost. Under three nights, a hotel's service usually wins.
