Why Paris
Paris is the one European capital where the choice between a hotel and a private apartment genuinely changes the holiday. A well-placed apartment on the rue de Verneuil or the place des Vosges gives you a boulangerie, a market and a neighbourhood — the thing people actually come to Paris for — at a nightly rate that undercuts a comparable suite.
The rule for choosing an address is simple: pick the arrondissement for the mornings, not the sights. You will walk or take the Métro to everything anyway, so what matters is the five minutes around your own front door.

7th — Gros-Caillou and Saint-Thomas-d'Aquin
The quietest grand address in the city: rue Cler for the market, the Musée d'Orsay and the Rodin at the end of the street, and the Champ de Mars for the children. Apartments here are large, formal and calm.
6th — Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Odéon
The most walkable Paris, and the most expensive per square metre. Galleries, the Luxembourg gardens, and dinner within two streets of the door. Best for couples and for a first long stay.
3rd and 4th — the Marais
Seventeenth-century hôtels particuliers, courtyards, the Musée Picasso, and the only central quarter that is fully alive on a Sunday. Noisier at night around rue des Archives.
1st — Palais-Royal and Tuileries
For a short, central, formal stay: the Louvre, the arcades, the best jewellers and the grande-dame hotels. Quiet at night, and empty of residents.
8th and 16th — Triangle d'Or and Passy
Where the flagship hotels sit and where families take large apartments. The 16th is residential and green, twenty minutes from everything, and the best value per bedroom in prime Paris.

Planning the stay
- Arrive on a Wednesday: the museums are calmer mid-week and Sunday markets fall naturally mid-stay.
- Book the two restaurants that matter before you book the flights — four to six weeks out for the best tables.
- Keep one whole day for a single quarter on foot, with no fixed plan.
- Take the Saturday morning at the Marché Bastille or the Marché Raspail and cook one dinner in.

- Where should I stay in Paris for a first luxury visit?
- The 6th or the 7th. Both are central, safe, quiet at night and walkable to the Louvre, the Orsay and Saint-Germain, and both have the largest stock of good private apartments.
- How much does a private apartment cost in Paris?
- From about USD 650 a night for a two-bedroom in a prime arrondissement to USD 4,500 for a staffed townhouse or full floor with terrace. The festive fortnight and fashion weeks sit above those bands.
- Is an apartment better than a hotel in Paris?
- For four nights or more, and for anyone travelling as a family or a group, usually yes: more space, a kitchen, a neighbourhood and a lower nightly rate. For two nights, a hotel's service is worth more than the space.
- How many days do you need in Paris?
- Four nights is the minimum that does not feel rushed. Five or six lets you add Versailles or a day in Champagne without giving up a city day.
