Why Santorini
Santorini's whole value sits on one wall of rock. A house on the caldera edge with its own pool and its own sunset is a genuinely rare thing; a hotel room ten metres below the path is not, and the gap between the two experiences is larger here than almost anywhere.
The second decision is the village. Oia has the sunset and the crowd that comes with it; Imerovigli has the same view with a fraction of the foot traffic; Firostefani sits between Fira's restaurants and the quiet. Off the caldera entirely, Vlychada and Perivolos trade the view for space, black-sand beach and considerably lower rates.

Imerovigli
The highest point of the caldera and the connoisseur's choice: the same view as Oia, no through-traffic, and a twenty-minute cliff walk to Fira for dinner.
Oia
The famous sunset, the best restaurants and the heaviest late-afternoon crowd. Worth it for a house with its own terrace, high enough to be above the path.
Firostefani and Fira
Walkable to everything, more life in the evening, slightly lower rates. Fira itself takes the cruise flow from late morning.
Pyrgos and the interior
The old hill town, vineyards, and the island's best-kept tavernas. No caldera drop, but sunset views across the whole island and far more space for the money.
Vlychada and Perivolos
The south coast: black sand, beach clubs, large flat villas with big pools. The family choice, and the only part of the island where a car is genuinely pleasant.

Planning the stay
- Book a private transfer: the airport road is slow and the caldera villages are largely car-free, with porters for the steps.
- Take the boat out on a day the meltemi is down — the hot springs and Thirassia in the morning, not the sunset cruise.
- Eat in Pyrgos or Megalochori at least twice; the caldera restaurants charge for the view.
- Leave the sunset in Oia to one evening, and watch the rest from your own terrace.

- How many nights should I spend in Santorini?
- Four is right for the island itself. If you want a week, pair it with Paros, Milos or Folegandros — all a short ferry away and far quieter.
