Why London
London is a city of villages that happen to share a postcode system, and the choice of which village you sleep in changes the holiday more than the choice of hotel ever could. A house in Notting Hill and a flat in Mayfair are twenty minutes apart and belong to different cities.
A private house makes more sense here than almost anywhere in Europe: the hotel rate for a family suite in SW1 buys a whole four-bedroom house with a garden two streets away, and you gain a kitchen, a front door and a neighbourhood butcher.

Belgravia and Knightsbridge — SW1, SW7
White stucco, garden squares and the quietest grand streets in central London. Walkable to Hyde Park, the museums and Harrods; the best stock of large family houses.
Chelsea — SW3
The King's Road, the river walk and the Physic Garden. Lower, lighter houses with real gardens, and the most liveable of the prime postcodes for a week or more.
Mayfair and St James's — W1, SW1
For a short, formal stay: the galleries, the tailors, the grande-dame hotels and the best restaurant density in Britain. Apartments rather than houses, and quiet at weekends.
Notting Hill and Holland Park — W11, W8
Communal garden squares, Portobello on a Saturday, and the family address of choice. Twenty minutes from the West End, and worth every one of them.
Marylebone and Regent's Park — W1, NW1
The village high street that central London does best, with the park at the end of it. Central, calm and the best value per bedroom inside zone one.

Planning the stay
- Arrive midweek: Sunday-to-Thursday houses price below Friday-to-Monday, and the museums are calmer.
- Book the two restaurants that matter six to eight weeks out; the rest can be decided on the day.
- Keep one day for a single village on foot — Marylebone, Chelsea or Notting Hill — with no fixed plan.
- Add a country leg: the Cotswolds, the South Downs or Oxford are all under two hours door to door.
