Why Barcelona
Barcelona does something almost no other European city manages: a full cultural capital with a working beach fifteen minutes from the centre and a mountain range behind it. That combination is why it suits a longer stay than most city breaks.
The city has also tightened its rules on short-term rentals, which has thinned the stock of legal whole-apartment lets and pushed a good part of the best private inventory into the hills above the city and down the coast to Sitges and the Costa Brava. Both are twenty-five to forty minutes away and both are better for a family than the Eixample in August.

Eixample Dreta
The modernista grid: Passeig de Gràcia, Casa Batlló, high-ceilinged principal floors with tiled galleries. Central, flat, walkable, and the best stock of formal apartments.
Sarrià–Sant Gervasi and Pedralbes
Above the city: quiet, green, cooler in summer, with gardens and pools. Fifteen minutes by cab to the centre and the choice for families.
Gothic Quarter and El Born
Medieval streets, the Picasso Museum, Santa Maria del Mar, the best small restaurants. Atmospheric, compact, and noisier at night.
Barceloneta and the Port Olímpic
The beach city: boardwalk, seafood, and water on your doorstep. Best from May to October, and best a street or two back from the sand.
Sitges and the Costa Brava
Thirty to ninety minutes out: sea-facing villas with pools and garaging, for groups who want the city by day and a garden at night.

Planning the stay
- Book the Sagrada Família and Park Güell online with timed entry, and take both at opening.
- Give one day to the coast — Sitges south, or Begur and Calella de Palafrugell north.
- Eat late: nothing serious starts before nine, and lunch at two is the main meal.
- Keep August plans indoor-and-water: pool in the afternoon, city in the morning and after eight.

- Yes for violent crime, which is rare. Pickpocketing is the real issue in the Ramblas, the metro and the beachfront: carry little, keep bags closed and in front of you, and the problem largely disappears.

- Four nights for the city and the beach; six if you take a villa and use the city as a day trip.
