Why Istanbul
Istanbul rewards a decision made before anything else: which side of the water you sleep on. The Bosphorus shore gives you ferries, fish restaurants and the strait outside the window; Galata and Beyoğlu give you the walking city; Sultanahmet puts the monuments at the end of the street and empties at night.
It is also one of the few great cities where a private house is the more characterful choice rather than simply the larger one. A restored wooden yali in Arnavutköy or a top-floor apartment over Galata is a better address than anything with a lobby.

The European Bosphorus — Bebek, Arnavutköy, Kuruçeşme
Wooden yalis, waterfront terraces and the best breakfasts in the city. Twenty minutes from the old city by boat, and the address Istanbullus themselves want.
Galata, Karaköy and Cihangir
The walking quarter: galleries, the tower, steep streets of nineteenth-century apartment blocks and the densest good eating. Best for a first stay and for couples.
Nişantaşı and Teşvikiye
Istanbul's Mayfair — flagship shopping, quiet residential streets and large formal apartments. Calm at night, and central without being touristic.
Sultanahmet and Fener-Balat
Inside the monuments: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the cisterns at walking pace before the coaches arrive. Quiet in the evening; short stays only.
The Asian shore — Kadıköy and Moda
Where the city actually lives: markets, meyhanes and sea-facing flats at two-thirds the European rate, a twenty-minute ferry from everything.

Planning the stay
- Take one whole day on the water: a private boat up the strait to Anadolu Kavağı beats any bus tour of the city.
- Do the old city between eight and eleven in the morning, before the cruise groups land.
- Book a hammam for the afternoon of your longest sightseeing day, not the first morning.
- Give the Asian shore a full evening — the ferry at dusk is the best half-hour in Istanbul.
