Why Edinburgh
Edinburgh is a small city that behaves like a large one. The Georgian New Town — a UNESCO-listed grid of stone terraces and private gardens — is one of the great pieces of European urban planning, and a whole townhouse on one of its crescents is the best-value grand stay in any British city.
It is also a base rather than a destination on its own. Gleneagles is an hour, St Andrews an hour and a half, Speyside and the whisky country three, and the west coast under four. A week that splits three nights in the city and three in the hills is the classic Scottish trip.

New Town — Moray Place and Heriot Row
The finest addresses in the city: full Georgian townhouses, private gardens, Princes Street ten minutes downhill. Quiet, formal, and large enough for a family or a group.
West End and Dean Village
Quieter still, with the Water of Leith walk, the modern art galleries and the best neighbourhood restaurants a few minutes away.
Stockbridge
The village within the city: Sunday market, independent shops, Georgian colonies houses, and a twenty-minute walk into the centre.
Old Town and the Royal Mile
Closes, wynds, the castle above and Holyrood below. Atmospheric and central for the Festival, and noisiest in August.
Leith and the shore
The waterfront: the city's best restaurants, converted warehouses and lower rates, fifteen minutes by tram from Princes Street.

Planning the stay
- Book the castle and the Royal Yacht for the first slot of the day, and Holyrood for late afternoon.
- Reserve a tasting at one of the Speyside or Islay flagship distilleries before you fix the dates.
- Golf at Gleneagles, Muirfield or North Berwick needs tee times months ahead in summer.
- Take one full day for the Highlands — Glencoe and Loch Lomond by car, or the West Highland Line by train.

- Very much so — arguably more. June and September give you the same city with open restaurant tables, normal rates and room to walk the Royal Mile.
- How far is the Highlands from Edinburgh?
- Glencoe is about two and a half hours by car, Speyside three, and Skye around five. A three-night Highland leg pairs naturally with three nights in the city.
