Amalfi Season Rules: Road Restrictions, Minimum Stays & Booking Windows
Two things shape a summer week here more than the villa itself: the SS163 and the stairs. The SS163 is the coastal state road, about 40 km from Vietri sul Mare to Positano, and it carries an alternating number-plate restriction at peak times. Many cliffside villas are also reached on foot from the nearest road, so ask for the step count.
Plan around both and the coast is far easier to move around.
Minimum stays
Minimum stays and changeover days are set by each villa and vary by date; some peak weeks may run Saturday to Saturday. Ask the booking partner for the terms on the exact villa and dates before you plan flights.
The number-plate restriction
In 2026 the restriction applies on the SS163 between Vietri sul Mare and Positano from 10:00 to 18:00 on the days it is active: weekends and holidays from 1 June to 31 July, every day in August and September, and weekends and holidays in October. On even-numbered dates cars with a plate ending in an even digit may not use the road; on odd dates, odd digits. Motorcycles and scooters are not affected, and exemptions include residents and, according to local reports, guests with a booking. Dates are set each year, so confirm the current ordinance and ask your villa what proof of booking is needed.

Booking window
Peak summer weeks are likely to go first. Ask the partner for current availability early, and check cancellation terms and any deposit schedule before you commit.
Arriving by sea
Seasonal ferries and private boat transfers can bypass the coast road. Ask for a quote and check the operator's current timetable; a boat lands you at a pier, not necessarily at your villa.

Staffing differs from villa to villa. Ask what is included, such as housekeeping, a caretaker or porter service, and which extras the partner can arrange, such as a chef, driver or boat. We have not published cost estimates for these services because we cannot source them; request line-item quotes.

Late spring and October are generally quieter than July and August, and the SS163 plate restriction applies only at weekends and holidays outside August and September. Ravello sits more than 300 metres above the sea and is typically cooler than the shoreline. Some seasonal businesses reduce service in October, so confirm what is open.
- For August, ask early about availability and plan around the road restrictions.
