Choose your arm before you choose your house
The lake is shaped like an inverted Y. The south-western arm runs down to Como town and Cernobbio, the south-eastern arm to Lecco, and the two meet the upper lake at the Bellagio promontory. Road journeys between villages on opposite shores are slow; the lake itself is the fastest route.
That is why the central basin — Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Tremezzina — suits most first stays: the car ferries cross between all four, so every classic garden and village is a short boat ride away.

Bellagio
The promontory where the three arms meet, with ferry connections in every direction. Lanes climb steeply from the waterfront; it is the busiest of the four in high summer.

Moving around the lake
Navigazione Laghi runs the public ferries, hydrofoils and the car ferries of the central basin. Timetables are fullest from spring to autumn and thin out in winter, so check the current season's timetable before building a day around a crossing.
Private boat transfers are the luxury alternative and remove timetable constraints entirely; arrange them through your house or hotel.

- For a first stay, the central basin — Bellagio, Varenna or Menaggio — because car ferries link all three. Varenna is simplest without a car thanks to its railway station; Cernobbio suits short stays near Como town.

- Regional trains run from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino on the Lecco – Tirano line; from Varenna, ferries cross to Bellagio and Menaggio. Cernobbio and Como town are best reached by road or via Como's stations.
- Do Lake Como ferries run all year?
