What a week costs on this coast

Portofino itself is tiny — a harbour, a piazzetta and a handful of villas behind gates in the promontory park. Most guests take a house in Santa Margherita Ligure or Paraggi, five to fifteen minutes away, and use the boat and the coast road.

Bands below are indicative for four- to six-bedroom villas with a garden and, where noted, a pool.

Where to base the week

  • Portofino and the promontory

Gated villas in the park above the harbour: the address, the privacy and the price. Parking is severely limited.

  • Paraggi

The only sandy bay on this coast, between Portofino and Santa Margherita. Swimming from the beach club and a short walk to the harbour path.

  • Santa Margherita Ligure

The practical base: villas in the hills, restaurants, a market, the rail station and boats to Portofino, San Fruttuoso and the Cinque Terre.

  • Zoagli and Rapallo

Ten to twenty minutes east, quieter and better value, with the same boat network.

  • Confirm parking: one space per villa is common and Portofino's road is closed to non-residents in peak hours.
  • Take the boat rather than the road between Santa Margherita and Portofino in August.
  • Ask how many steps lead down to the villa — this coast is vertical.
  • San Fruttuoso abbey and the Cinque Terre are both day trips by water.
  • May and late September have the same swimming and half the crowds.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a villa near Portofino cost per week?
Indicatively USD 7,000 to 26,000 for a four- to six-bedroom villa in May or June, and USD 14,000 to 52,000 in August. Gated villas in Portofino itself run from USD 30,000 to over USD 130,000 a week.
Should I stay in Portofino or Santa Margherita Ligure?
Santa Margherita for practicality — restaurants, market, station, boats and parking — and Portofino or Paraggi if privacy and the harbour walk matter more than convenience.
When is the best time to visit Portofino?
May and late September: warm enough to swim, everything open, and roughly half of August rates without the day-trip crowds.
How do you get to Portofino?
Genoa airport is forty-five minutes to an hour by road; Santa Margherita is on the main rail line from Genoa and Milan, and boats run from there to Portofino through the season.
