Why St Barts is a villa island

Saint Barthélemy is a French overseas collectivity of about 25 km² including its islets, with roughly 10,660 residents at the January 2023 census. There is very little large-resort inventory, so most visitors stay in private villas rather than hotels — which is why St Barts vacation rentals set the island's market, not the other way round.

The island is hilly and cut into small coves, so a villa's position decides almost everything: the view, the wind, the walk to the sand and the drive to Gustavia. Nothing is far — the island measures only a few kilometres end to end — but ten minutes on steep, narrow roads feels longer than it sounds.

Where to rent a villa on St Barts

Gustavia and its hills (Corossol, Lurin): harbour views, restaurants and shops within a short drive, and the island's port for day boats. Pointe Milou and Lorient: east-facing ridges, sunrise light and breeze, close to the beach at Lorient. Colombier and Flamands: the quieter north-west, with long sunset views and Flamands' broad beach below.

St Jean sits beside the airport and the island's liveliest beach; Grand Cul-de-Sac and Petit Cul-de-Sac face a sheltered lagoon suited to children and paddle sports; Saline and Gouverneur are the undeveloped beaches most guests drive to rather than stay beside. Choose the area first, then the house.

Season, rates and what gets added to the bill

The island's climate has a dry season from December to May and a wetter season from July to October, which is also the Atlantic hurricane window. The Christmas–New Year fortnight prices as a market of its own, typically booked with minimum stays well in advance; April to June and November give the same villas at lower weekly rates.

A tourist tax of 5% of the accommodation price, excluding services such as catering, is collected on behalf of the Collectivité de Saint-Barthélemy. Budget for it separately from the nightly rate, along with car hire, which most villa guests need.

Getting to St Barts

Gustaf III Airport (SBH) has one of the shortest commercial runways in the Caribbean and takes only small propeller aircraft. Most guests connect through Sint Maarten (SXM) for a short hop or a ferry crossing; there are also flights from San Juan and neighbouring islands. Allow a night's buffer on the long-haul leg — the last flights leave around dusk.
