Best Places to Travel in January: Where to Go After the Festive Exodus
From 4 January onward the travel world empties and the rates follow. January is the connoisseur's month: peak-season weather at the Caribbean, snow at its deepest in the Alps, and a fraction of the festive crowds.
The month after
January begins with the most expensive week of the year and then, quite suddenly, becomes the best-value month in luxury travel. Once the festive charters leave on the 3rd and 4th, the Caribbean keeps its finest weather, the Alps reach their deepest snow base, and the houses that were unbookable a week earlier sit open at rates 40–60% lower.
The trade-off is atmospheric rather than climatic. St Barts in mid-January is quieter and a touch cooler in the evenings; the big alpine resorts lose the festive theatre. What you get in return is the same product — often the identical house — with the crowds and the premium removed.

How to choose between them
For the Caribbean at its best without the festive bill
Barbados or St Barts from the second week of January. The weather is identical to the fortnight just passed; the rate is not.
For skiing
January is the snow-surest month of the alpine season, and midweek January is the quietest skiing of the year. The cold is the price: pack for it and take the empty pistes as the reward.
For guaranteed heat
Dubai and the Maldives are the dependable answers — Dubai at a perfect 24°C, the Maldives at the driest point of its year.
For the contrarian bargain
Bora Bora in January is hot, humid and occasionally very wet — and half the price of July, with the lagoon to yourself. A fair trade if you read the seasons guide first.
The one January caveat
The first week of January is still festive inventory at festive prices — the value window opens from roughly 7 January, not the 1st. And in the Alps, the last week of the month brushes against the February school holidays in some years; the middle two weeks are the sweet spot.
