The month after
January begins with the most expensive week of the year and then, quite suddenly, becomes the shoulder-season month. Once the festive charters leave on the 3rd and 4th, the Caribbean is in its dry season, the Alps reach their deepest snow base, and the villas that were unbookable a week earlier often open up at noticeably lower rates.
The trade-off is atmospheric rather than climatic. St Barts in mid-January is quieter and a touch cooler in the evenings; the big alpine resorts lose the festive theatre. What you get in return is the same product — often the identical villa — with the crowds and the premium removed.

The first week of January is still festive inventory at festive prices — the value window opens from roughly 7 January, not the 1st. And in the Alps, the last week of the month brushes against the February school holidays in some years; the middle two weeks are the sweet spot.
