The honest summary before the detail
Government travel advice is country-specific and can differ between the UK, US and Australia. UK advice checked 3 October 2026 warns against all but essential travel to parts of southern Thailand and within 20 km of the Cambodia border; it warns against all travel to western and central Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago, with further restrictions elsewhere in Mindanao. Check the current advice for each place on your itinerary, including transit routes.
The differences are worth knowing, though, because they change what preparation means. In Japan you prepare for earthquakes, not muggings. In Bali and Thailand you prepare for the road. In the Philippines you prepare by choosing your island carefully. In the Maldives the nearest hospital may be a seaplane away. Each country page below gives the plain verdict, the risk that actually matters, and the habits that make a trip uneventful.

The five habits that cover most of it
- Never ride a scooter without a helmet, an international licence and insurance that covers it — this is the single biggest cause of serious traveller injury in Southeast Asia.
- Swim between the flags, and take rip currents seriously in Bali, Phuket, Okinawa and the Philippines.
- Buy travel insurance that explicitly covers medical evacuation, especially for the Maldives and remote islands.
- Carry prescription medicines in original packaging with a copy of the prescription; several common drugs are restricted in Japan, Singapore and Indonesia.
- Read your own government's advisory for each country the week before you fly, and register with it where that service exists.

- Is Asia safe for solo female travellers?
- Broadly yes, and exceptionally so in Japan, South Korea and Singapore. Elsewhere the usual precautions apply — arranged transport at night, drinks watched, an eye on local dress norms in conservative areas.
- Do I need vaccinations to travel to Asia?
- It depends on the country and your itinerary. Routine vaccinations plus hepatitis A and typhoid are commonly advised for Southeast Asia; Japan, Singapore and South Korea generally need nothing beyond routine cover. Ask a travel clinic six to eight weeks ahead.
- Is the tap water safe in Asia?
