The short answer
November is Japan's other April. Maple colour reaches Kyoto in the third week and the city fills again — temple night-openings, queues at Tofukuji, and machiya houses at blossom-season rates. The light is colder and better, and the weather is more reliable than in spring.
Away from Kyoto the month is simply excellent. Tokyo's ginkgo avenues turn late, Kanazawa opens crab season on the Japan Sea, and the mountains are between seasons and quiet.
Where to be in November
Kyoto
Peak maple colour around the third week, with temple illuminations after dark. Book far ahead or visit at dawn.
Kanazawa
Snow-crab season opens in early November; the gardens turn a fortnight after Kyoto.
Tokyo
Late colour in the ginkgo avenues, crisp air and none of Kyoto's congestion.
- Kyoto's peak colour typically lands between 18 and 30 November — commit houses six to twelve months out.
- Temple night illuminations require timed tickets; book when they release in September.
- Early November is quieter, cheaper and still beautiful in Tokyo and the mountains.
