What Hakone costs
Hakone is where Tokyo goes to stop. The stock splits between high-end ryokan, where the rate is per person and includes two elaborate meals, and a small set of private villas with their own hot-spring baths — the better choice for a family or a party who want the valley to themselves.

Which valley
Gora
The classic address: steep, wooded, the best ryokan and the open-air museum. Walkable in parts, which is rare here.
Sengokuhara
Open grassland and pampas, the widest Fuji views and most of the private villas. Quietest at night.
Hakone-Yumoto and Tonosawa
First stop off the train, riverside and convenient for a single night without a car.
Lake Ashi and Motohakone
The lake, the torii gate in the water and the best Fuji photograph in Japan on a clear winter morning.
- Take the Romancecar from Shinjuku with reserved seats — 85 minutes, and the front carriage is worth asking for.
- A private-bath room (kashikiri or in-room rotenburo) matters if anyone has tattoos or wants privacy.
- Two nights is the correct length; three only if you are walking the old Tokaido road.
- Winter mornings give the clearest Fuji; by afternoon the cloud usually wins.
- Ryokan dinners start early, around six — plan the day's sightseeing to finish by five.

- Yes, most reliably from Lake Ashi and Sengokuhara on clear winter mornings. Cloud typically builds through the afternoon, so plan the viewing early in the day.
- Do Hakone ryokan accept guests with tattoos?
- Communal baths often do not, but rooms with private open-air baths solve the problem entirely and are standard at the top of the market. Ask for a rotenburo-attached room when booking.
