What Kanazawa costs
Kanazawa escaped wartime bombing, so the samurai and geisha districts are real rather than reconstructed. The stock splits between restored machiya townhouses rented whole, a small number of serious ryokan, and a handful of design hotels near the station. Prices sit meaningfully below Kyoto for equivalent quality — the single best argument for coming.

The samurai district behind earthen walls, central and calm, five minutes from the Omicho market.

Beside the garden and the 21st Century Museum — the choice if you want to walk to everything cultural.
Kaga onsen (20–30 min by train)
Yamanaka and Yamashiro: the hot-spring valleys that make Kanazawa a wellness base rather than a city stop.
- Eat breakfast at Omicho market — the fish is the equal of anything in Tokyo at a fraction of the price.
- Kenrokuen is best at opening, before eight, especially in snow.
- Winter here means real snow off the Sea of Japan; pack accordingly and expect the pine ropes to be up.
- Pair three nights in the city with two in Yamanaka onsen for the full trip.
- The Shinkansen from Tokyo is 2h30 — reserve seats in Gran Class or green car for the November weeks.
