The short answer
Golden Week ends around 5 May and Japan exhales. What follows is the shinryoku season — new green — with the year's best combination of warmth, dryness and space. Kyoto's gardens are full and empty at once; Hokkaido finally blossoms; the coast warms.
For travellers who want April's weather without April's queues, mid-May is the answer, and rates reflect the lull rather than the quality. The only caveat is the calendar's far end: the rainy season reaches Okinawa in the last week.

Kyoto
Moss, maples in leaf and the aoi matsuri in mid-May, without the blossom-season crush.
Okinawa
Warm and swimmable early in the month; the rainy season typically arrives in the last week.
Hakone
Clear Fuji views are more likely in May than in the humid months that follow.
- Avoid 29 April to 5 May unless booked long in advance — it is the domestic peak.
- From 7 May the same houses drop sharply and stay quiet until the rains.
- Okinawa's rainy season usually starts in the final week of May — go early in the month.
- Mid-May is the best window of the year for a first visit balancing weather, space and price.

- Is it too hot in Japan in May?
- No. Tokyo runs roughly 15–23°C with low humidity. The heat and humidity arrive with the rainy season in June.
