The short answer
Golden Week ends around 5 May. What follows is the shinryoku season — new green — with warm, dry weather and fewer domestic travellers on the move. Kyoto's gardens are in full leaf; Hokkaido finally blossoms; the coast warms.
For travellers who want April's weather without April's queues, mid-May is the answer, and rates reflect the lull rather than the quality. The only caveat is the calendar's far end: the rainy season reaches Okinawa in the last week.
Where to be in May
Kyoto
Moss, maples in leaf and the Aoi Matsuri procession on 15 May, without the blossom-season crush.
Okinawa
Warm and swimmable early in the month; the rainy season typically arrives in the last week.
Hakone
Clear Fuji views are more likely in May than in the humid months that follow.
Tokyo
Warm, dry days suited to walking. The Sanja Matsuri at Asakusa Shrine runs over a Friday-to-Sunday weekend in mid-May; the shrine's schedule lists 14–16 May 2027 (subject to change). Kanda Myojin holds the Kanda Matsuri once every two years, most recently in 2025, so the next full festival falls in 2027 — check the shrine for dates.
Hokkaido
Spring arrives late: cherry blossom reaches Sapporo and Hakodate around late April to early May, and the island stays cool and uncrowded through the month.
Kanazawa and the Japan Alps
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route typically opens in mid-April, and its snow corridor is still standing into May — one of the month's most distinctive sights.
- Avoid 29 April to 5 May unless booked long in advance — it is the domestic peak.
- From 7 May the same villas drop sharply and stay quiet until the rains.
