What an Okinawa villa costs
Okinawa is Japan's beach country and it is priced domestically, which means the rates are gentler than the water suggests. The top of the market is a small set of private beach villas and resort villas on the main island's Motobu peninsula, Miyako and Ishigaki — most with a pool, a kitchen and a car included.
Bands are indicative per night for the whole villa.
| Season | 2-bedroom villa | 4-bedroom villa | Beachfront estate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Golden Week and August | USD 900 – 1,700 | USD 1,600 – 3,000 | USD 3,000 – 6,000 |
| Late April, June, October | USD 600 – 1,100 | USD 1,100 – 2,000 | USD 2,000 – 3,800 |
| November–March | USD 450 – 850 | USD 800 – 1,500 | USD 1,500 – 2,800 |
Which island
Main island, Motobu and Onna
Easiest access, the aquarium, the best restaurant range and most of the resort villas. Drive everywhere; the north is quiet.
Miyako
The best beaches in Japan, bridged islands and clear shallow water. Small, calm and increasingly the luxury choice.
Ishigaki and the Yaeyamas
Further south and wilder — diving, Taketomi's sand lanes and Iriomote's jungle rivers a ferry away.
Kerama islands
A day trip from Naha for the clearest water in the country; humpbacks pass between January and March.
- Hire a car — the islands are not walkable and taxis are thin outside Naha.
- The rainy season runs early May to late June; late April and October are the reliable sun windows.
- Typhoons between July and October can close airports for a day or two; take flexible fares in those months.
- Golden Week and Obon are the domestic peaks, with rates and ferries to match.
- Winter is warm rather than hot — good for walking, whales and value, not for swimming.
Frequently asked questions
- When is the best time to visit Okinawa?
- Late April before the rains, and October after the typhoon peak, are the two reliable windows: warm sea, clear skies and moderate rates. June is wet, July and August are hot and busy, and winter is mild but not swimming weather.
- How much does an Okinawa villa cost?
- Indicatively USD 600 to 1,100 per night for a two-bedroom villa in the shoulder months, USD 900 to 1,700 in August and Golden Week, and USD 450 to 850 from November to March. Beachfront estates run to USD 6,000.
- Which Okinawan island is best?
- The main island for access and variety, Miyako for the best beaches and calm luxury, Ishigaki and the Yaeyamas for diving and wilder scenery, and the Kerama islands for the clearest water on a day trip.
- When is typhoon season in Okinawa?
- July to October, peaking in September. Storms are tracked days ahead and rarely cancel a full trip, but flights can pause for a day — book flexible fares in those months.
- Can you swim in Okinawa in winter?
- Sea temperatures drop to around 21C in February, which suits diving in a wetsuit more than casual swimming. Winter is better for whale watching, walking and value than for beach days.
