The short answer
March is the hinge. The first half is still winter-adjacent — clear, cold mornings, empty gardens, spring-snow skiing in Nagano — and the second half turns green fast. Blossom forecasts are published from January, and by the last week Tokyo is usually opening.
The trick for March is to travel one week before the forecast peak. You get the first flowering, the pre-peak rates and none of the Golden Week congestion that follows in April. Early-opening trees in Tokyo and Shizuoka give colour before Kyoto does.
Where to be in March
Tokyo
Usually the first major city to open blossom, in the final week. Meguro River and Shinjuku Gyoen are the reference points.
Hakuba
Spring skiing: softer snow, long sunny afternoons, and half the January rate.
Kanazawa
Kenrokuen in early spring, before the coach season, with the year's best seafood still running.

- Book the last week of March at the same lead time as April — it now prices like peak.
