The short answer
February is the connoisseur's month. The cities are cold and quiet, the ryokan are heated and full of winter kaiseki, and the plum gardens — Kairakuen, Kitano Tenmangu — open the blossom season three weeks before anyone books flights for it.
The north is still deep in snow. Powder quality holds through February in Hokkaido and Nagano, with slightly softer demand than January outside the Chinese New Year fortnight. It is the best combination of snow and availability in the season.
Where to be in February
Hokkaido
Snow quality holds and lift queues shorten after the first week — outside Chinese New Year, which moves each year.
Kyoto
Plum blossom from mid-February, deep-winter kaiseki and temples that are still genuinely quiet.
Hakone
Onsen weather at its most persuasive: cold air, hot water, occasional snow over the valley.
- Check the Chinese New Year dates before booking ski weeks — they move between late January and late February.
- Plum blossom peaks mid to late February in Tokyo and Kyoto, weeks ahead of the cherry.
- City hotel and house rates are at their annual floor — this is the month to take the room you would not pay for in April.
- Roads in the north need winter tyres; use transfers rather than self-drive.

- Is February a good month to visit Japan?
- It is the best-value month of the year. Cities are quiet and cheap, the snow is still excellent, and plum blossom gives you colour without the April crowds.
- Is there cherry blossom in February?
- Only in Okinawa, where the early kanhizakura flowers from late January. Mainland cherry blossom starts in late March; February belongs to plum.
- Is February still good for skiing in Japan?
- Yes — Hokkaido and Nagano hold excellent snow through the month, with shorter queues than January outside the Chinese New Year fortnight.
