Planning notes

Where to base yourself

Paris: the 6th and 7th for quiet and walkability, the Marais for evenings. London: Mayfair and Chelsea for space, Marylebone for a village feel. Milan: Brera and Quadrilatero. Venice: San Marco for first visits, Dorsoduro for a second. Barcelona: Eixample. Edinburgh: the New Town. Istanbul: Beşiktaş and the Bosphorus shore rather than Sultanahmet.

Apartment or hotel

An apartment wins past four nights, with a family, or when you want a kitchen and separate bedrooms. A hotel wins on short stays and in cities where staffed service matters more than square metres. The live panel on this page prices both in the same week so you can compare honestly.

Timing

April to June and September to October are the best months across all seven cities — mild, open and busy without being impossible. August empties Paris and Milan of locals, and Venice and Barcelona of calm. Winter is the value season everywhere except the Christmas fortnight.
