Choosing the island

St Barts has the best restaurants and the busiest festive fortnight. Mustique is the most private, and books a year ahead for Christmas. Canouan is the calmest water and the easiest with children. Barbados has the widest direct-flight access from Europe and North America. Harbour Island is small, pink-sanded and golf-cart paced.

Festive weeks and minimum stays

Christmas and New Year carry 10–14 night minimums on most Caribbean estates and the year's highest rates, often booked twelve months out. January to April holds the same weather at a materially lower price with no minimum of that length.

Hurricane season, plainly

The official season runs June to November, with August to October the active core. Rates drop sharply and many houses close for part of it. If you travel then, book a flexible rate and take insurance that names named-storm cancellation.
