Planning notes

Ipanema, Leblon or Copacabana

Leblon is the quietest and most residential. Ipanema has the same beach with more life and shopping. Copacabana has the landmark hotels and a longer, busier stretch of sand — pick the beach-front side of Avenida Atlântica or you will cross six lanes each morning.

The view costs real money

Ocean-front rooms carry a large premium and, on the busiest blocks, the traffic noise that goes with them. A high floor one street back is often the better room.

Sensible caution

Take nothing to the beach you would mind losing, use app cars after dark, and leave watches and jewellery in the safe. Sugarloaf and Christ the Redeemer are best early, before both the queues and the haze.

The best months to go

May to October: The dry season: cooler, clearer and the best chance of a sharp view from Corcovado.
December to March: Hot, humid summer with afternoon storms. Carnival dates move each year and take rates and minimum stays with them.
April and November: Shoulder months. Warm, less crowded and noticeably better value.
