Planning notes

Lakeside, not town centre

The town itself is functional. The stays worth paying for sit west along Avenida Bustillo and around Llao Llao, facing Nahuel Huapi with the Andes behind. Budget twenty to forty minutes into town for dinner.

Two different holidays

December to March is hiking, kayaking and long dinners outside. July and August is Cerro Catedral, the largest ski area in South America, with school-holiday crowds in the middle of July.

Pair it, don't isolate it

Bariloche sits well before or after Buenos Aires, and connects by air to El Calafate for Patagonia. The Seven Lakes drive north to San Martín de los Andes is a full, worthwhile day.

The best months to go

December to March: Warm, long days, lake swimming and the full hiking network open. Peak rates in January.
July and August: Ski season at Cerro Catedral. Book by autumn; mid-July is the Argentine school holiday and the busiest fortnight of the year.
April to June, September to November: Shoulder. Excellent value, changeable weather, some lifts and lake excursions not running.
