Chile

Where to stay in the Atacama.

The driest desert on earth, at 2,400 metres, with the clearest night sky most people will ever stand under. Stays cluster in and around San Pedro de Atacama and run on lodge programmes.

We don't hold our own houses in South America yet. Everything listed here is a real hotel, lodge or rental from our booking partners, with live prices for your dates — booked on their site, with our planning notes alongside.

Planning notes

Lodge programmes

The established lodges include full board and two guided excursions a day — geysers before dawn, salt flats and lagoons, high-altitude passes. Simpler hotels in the village are room-only and you book excursions separately.

Altitude is the real constraint

San Pedro sits at 2,400 metres and the excursions climb past 4,000. Spend your first day low and slow, drink far more water than feels necessary, and leave the highest trips to day three.

Stargazing

Book astronomy nights around the new moon; a full moon washes the sky out. Nights drop close to freezing year-round, whatever the afternoon felt like.

The best months to go

March to May, September to November
The best windows: stable, clear and comfortable, without the winter night-time extremes.
December to February
Warmest days, plus the 'Bolivian winter' — brief afternoon storms on the altiplano that can close high routes.
June to August
Coldest nights and the sharpest skies. Excellent for stargazing if you pack properly.
