Planning notes

Uco Valley or Luján de Cuyo

Uco is higher, newer and more dramatic — an hour and a half from the city, best if you want to stay put among vines. Luján de Cuyo is forty minutes out and easier if you are mixing wineries with city dinners.

Book lunch before you book the car

The good winery restaurants take reservations weeks ahead in harvest season and many close on Sundays. Plan two winery visits a day, not four, and use a driver — tasting and mountain roads do not mix.

Altitude and sun

Vineyards sit between 900 and 1,500 metres. Days are hot and dry, nights drop sharply, and the sun is fierce at that altitude even when the air feels cool.

The best months to go

March and April: Harvest. The best time to be here and the busiest — book hotels and winery tables well ahead.
October to December: Spring into early summer: green vines, snow still on the Andes, comfortable temperatures.
June to August: Cold nights, bare vines, lowest rates, and easy access to Andean skiing at Las Leñas.
