Colombia

Where to stay in Cartagena.

Colonial mansions turned into small hotels inside the walls, with rooftop pools over the rooftops. It is hot, it is loud in the best way, and the walled city is where you want to sleep.

We don't hold our own houses in South America yet. Everything listed here is a real hotel, lodge or rental from our booking partners, with live prices for your dates — booked on their site, with our planning notes alongside.

Planning notes

Inside the walls

The old city's converted houses are the reason to come: courtyards, twelve to thirty rooms, plunge pools on the roof. Getsemaní next door is younger and cheaper with real nightlife. Bocagrande is high-rise beach and feels like a different city.

The heat is the schedule

Sightsee early, retreat to the pool from noon, walk the walls at sunset. Anything else and the humidity wins.

Islands, not city beaches

City beaches are ordinary. The Rosario Islands are forty-five minutes by boat and worth a day or an overnight; arrange the boat through your hotel rather than at the dock.

The best months to go

December to April
Dry season: the best weather and the highest rates, peaking over Christmas and New Year.
May to June, November
Short rains, usually brief afternoon downpours. Good value and manageable.
August to October
Wettest and least predictable, and within the wider Caribbean hurricane season.
