Planning notes

Recoleta, Palermo or Puerto Madero

Recoleta is grand, central and walkable to the classic sights. Palermo is greener and where most of the restaurants people fly in for actually are. Puerto Madero is modern and quiet, with a longer walk to anywhere interesting.

Dinner at ten

Restaurants fill from 9.30pm. Book ahead for the well-known parrillas and tasting menus, and treat an 8pm table as the tourist slot — you will be the only ones there.

Money and taxis

Card acceptance is normal in hotels and good restaurants. Use app-based cars rather than hailing on the street, and keep phones away on the subway and in San Telmo market crowds.

The best months to go

September to November: Spring: jacaranda in bloom, mild days, the best all-round window.
March to May: Autumn. Comfortable, quieter and good value, and it pairs neatly with the Mendoza harvest.
December to February: Hot and humid, and much of the city leaves for the coast in January. Some restaurants close for the month.
