The short answer
August is the loudest month of the Japanese year: Obon brings the country home, fireworks fill the river nights, and the lowland cities sit in heavy humid heat. It is the month to travel north or up rather than through Kyoto.
Hokkaido is the answer for most travellers — 25°C, dry, with lavender fields and coastal seafood — and the Nagano highlands run a similar margin cooler than Tokyo. Okinawa is beautiful and hot, with genuine typhoon risk through the month.

Cool nights and hiking, a short train ride from the heat.
Tokyo
Hot, but the fireworks nights and the emptied Obon week are their own reason to be there.
- Obon falls around 13–16 August; trains, flights and rates all peak — book six to nine months ahead.
- Typhoon risk is real from August to early October; keep transfers flexible.
- Lowland cities are best handled with early mornings, taxis and long lunches indoors.
- Hokkaido and Nagano are the reliably comfortable options.
