The short answer
April is the month Japan is photographed in. Blossom moves north through the first two weeks — Tokyo and Kyoto in the first ten days, Kanazawa and the mountains a little later, Hokkaido in May — and the weather is the most reliable of the year: mild, dry, long-lit.
It is also the month that punishes late planning. Kyoto's machiya houses and the best ryokan are committed nine to twelve months ahead, rates run at their annual ceiling, and the final week rolls into Golden Week, when the whole country travels at once.
Where to be in April
Kyoto
Blossom in the first ten days, then a quieter fortnight. Book the house before you book the flight.
Tokyo
Earlier and easier than Kyoto — more inventory absorbs the crowds and the riverside parks are the best in the country.
Okinawa
The escape valve: warm, swimmable and outside the blossom migration entirely.
- Commit blossom-week houses nine to twelve months ahead; there is no late availability worth having.
- Golden Week starts around 29 April — domestic travel peaks and rates jump again.
- Blossom is a moving target: build a two-week window rather than a two-day one.
- If flexibility matters more than flowers, take late April after the petals drop — the weather is identical and the city is calm.
