The question everyone asks, answered properly
UK Indonesia advice checked 4 October 2026 does not carry a blanket warning against all travel to Bali, but it does set out specific risks. It says traffic discipline is very poor and that there has been a large increase in moped and motorbike accidents in Bali, some fatal. It recommends wearing a helmet in good condition, holding the right licence, checking your insurance and considering a private driver or a hired car with a driver.
UK advice also reports that cases of rape and sexual assault are high in Bali and Lombok, that drink spiking has been reported there and on the Gili Islands, and that bag-snatching and pickpocketing are common in busy tourist areas. It warns of scams including credit card fraud and unlicensed money changers, and of deaths and serious illness from alcohol containing methanol. The US State Department rates Indonesia Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, citing natural disasters, unrest and terrorism (summary updated 6 July 2026).

UK advice recommends a helmet in good condition, the right licence for the vehicle and insurance that covers riding; it also suggests considering a private driver or a hired car with a driver.
Surf and rip currents

It also notes Nyepi, the Balinese day of silence, when people are asked to stay indoors and Bali's airport closes for the day; check the date before you book (confirm the date in Indonesia’s official holiday calendar).
Keep valuables secure and bags closed in busy areas, use only licensed money changers, and agree fees in advance at spas and salons. Be cautious with alcohol: UK advice warns of methanol poisoning, and of drink spiking linked to sexual assault, assault and robbery.
