Philippines Travel Safety FAQ: Which Islands, and Why It Matters

What the advisories say

UK advice says there are high levels of street crime and robbery in the Philippines, sometimes involving weapons, and that multiple terrorist groups have the intent to carry out attacks anywhere in the country, including Manila. The US State Department feed rates the Philippines Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, citing crime, terrorism, civil unrest and kidnapping, and says not to travel to Sulu and Marawi and to reconsider travel to the rest of Mindanao. We read the US advisory through its data feed rather than the full State Department page.

UK FCDO advice (checked 4 October 2026) advises against all travel to western and central Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago, and against all but essential travel to the rest of Mindanao except Camiguin, Dinagat and Siargao. Other countries' advisories draw different boundaries. Check the live advice and every transfer route before booking.

Weather, water and transport

• Typhoons

  UK advice says around 20 typhoons hit the Philippines each year, most between June and November. Build slack into itineraries in those months, buy flexible flights, and follow PAGASA warnings.

• Ferries and small boats

  UK advice says the ferry and passenger boat network has a poor record of maritime safety, and advises avoiding overcrowded ferries. Check your transfers with your accommodation and confirm life jackets are provided.

• Sea safety

  UK advice says beaches are unlikely to have lifeguards or warning signs, and suggests asking your hotel or local residents about conditions. We have not verified conditions at specific beaches or dive sites; dive within your certification and check the operator's equipment.

• City precautions

  UK advice warns that some taxi drivers and their accomplices have robbed and harmed passengers, and advises using reputable taxis only. It also says armed hold-ups on jeepneys and buses can happen, particularly in Manila and other large cities.

• Health

  UK advice says dengue is present year-round, with higher risk between June and October. We have not verified drinking-water standards or medical evacuation options for this page; check your government's health guidance, ask a travel clinic and confirm your insurance covers evacuation.

• ✓Check UK Mindanao and Sulu restrictions, including all-but-essential areas, and your own government's live advice.
• ✓Avoid overcrowded ferries and confirm transfers with your accommodation.

• ✓Check your insurance includes medical evacuation, especially for remote islands.
