The short answer
Once Golden Week ends around 5 May, Japan becomes the easiest version of itself: warm, dry, deeply green and unusually quiet. Bali is in the first stretch of its dry season, still ahead of the July crowds, and the Maldives are turning towards the south-west monsoon.
Thailand's first rains arrive and break the April heat without turning the country wet — the green season opens gently and rates drop.
The Asia cluster:
May across the region
| Destination | Conditions | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | Warm, dry, green after Golden Week | Excellent |
| Thailand | Hot with first rains; green season opens | Good value |
| Bali | Dry season, ideal | Excellent |
| Maldives | Monsoon turning; more wind and rain | Mixed |
| Philippines | Hot; rains begin late | Good early |
