The short answer

Once Golden Week ends around 5 May, Japan becomes the easiest version of itself: warm, dry, deeply green and unusually quiet. Bali is in the first stretch of its dry season, still ahead of the July crowds, and the Maldives are turning towards the south-west monsoon.

Thailand's first rains arrive and break the April heat without turning the country wet — the green season opens gently and rates drop.

Where to be, and what to book

  • Japan

Fresh green season after the 7th: the best weather-to-crowd ratio of the year.

  • Bali

Dry, warm and not yet busy. The ideal month for a villa week.

  • Thailand

First rains, cooler afternoons, low-season pricing on the islands.

  • Avoid 29 April to 5 May in Japan; from the 7th rates fall sharply.
  • Bali is at its best-value strong-weather point of the year.
  • Maldives conditions deteriorate through the month as the monsoon turns.
  • Thai island rates drop as the green season begins.

Frequently asked questions

Is May a good time to travel in Asia?
Yes — Japan after Golden Week and Bali in early dry season are both excellent, and Thailand's green season brings sharp value.
Is May rainy season in Thailand?
The green season begins, with short heavy afternoon showers rather than continuous rain, and noticeably lower rates.
Is May good for the Maldives?
It is the turn of the monsoon — more wind and rain than the January-to-April window, but also lower rates.
