The short answer

February is Thailand's cleanest month: dry, cool by local standards, with calm seas on the Andaman coast. It is also, quietly, the cheapest month to stay well in Japan, where plum blossom opens the colour season and the cities are empty.

The variable is Chinese New Year, which lands between late January and late February and moves rates across the whole region for a fortnight. Check it before committing to any date.

Where to be, and what to book

  • Thailand

Peak dry season on both coasts and the year's best sea conditions in the Andaman.

  • Japan

Cheap, quiet cities, plum blossom from mid-month and still-excellent snow.

  • Maldives

Dry, calm and expensive; the best underwater visibility of the year.

  • Confirm the Chinese New Year dates before booking — they shift regional rates for two weeks.
  • Japanese city houses are at their annual price floor this month.
  • Andaman-coast sea conditions are the calmest of the year.
  • Bali stays wet; Java and Lombok follow the same pattern.
