Punta Mita occupies a private peninsula at the northern end of Banderas Bay, about forty minutes from Puerto Vallarta airport. Access is gated, the resort communities run their own security, and the surrounding villages of Sayulita and San Pancho are relaxed surf towns with an established visitor culture.
The state of Nayarit has historically carried a lower US advisory level than much of Mexico, and the coastal strip where visitors stay is not where the state's problems sit. Even so, the standard Mexican habits apply: use house-arranged transport rather than street taxis at night, keep to the highway in daylight when driving to Sayulita or Vallarta, and use ATMs inside banks or hotels.
The ocean deserves more attention than the crime question. Banderas Bay beaches are mostly calm, but the open Pacific side has strong surf and rip currents, and some breaks are for experienced swimmers only. Hurricane season runs June to November, peaking in September and October.
