Marrakech is a major visitor city, but current UK advice is clear that terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Morocco, including at tourist sites, transport hubs and crowded places, and that protests can occur in large cities without warning. Read the official advice for your nationality before booking, stay aware of your surroundings and avoid demonstrations.
The UK advice says petty crime is common in tourist areas, especially in medina quarters, including pickpocketing, bag-snatching and drive-by motorcycle theft of jewellery and handbags; occasional violent crime has involved knives in major cities and on beaches. Avoid quiet areas after dark, carry little cash, keep bags and phones out of sight, and agree prices before taxis, guides or henna. Using a car arranged by your riad is a sensible precaution; it is our suggestion, not official advice.
The September 2023 Al Haouz earthquake damaged parts of the old city and many Atlas villages. Check the current status of any site or mountain route you plan to visit, and use a driver your accommodation knows for Atlas day trips. In an emergency, the UK advice gives 150 for an ambulance.

- What are the common scams in Marrakech?
- The UK advice lists bogus tourist guides, card fraud and the substitution of inferior goods among common scams. Use licensed guides booked through your accommodation, agree every price first, and be ready to walk away.
- Is the food and water safe in Marrakech?
- Drink bottled water. Eat where the turnover is high — busy stalls and established restaurants — and the food is a highlight rather than a risk. Peel-it-or-cook-it is the rule for the first days while your stomach adjusts.
