Careyes is not a town but a private community — a collection of estates, casitas and a small hotel spread along a gated stretch of the Costalegre, roughly between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo. Access is controlled, the community runs its own security, and guests generally move between house, beach and restaurant without ever leaving the estate's orbit.
That makes the relevant safety question the transfer. The drive from Puerto Vallarta airport runs about two and a half hours south on Highway 200, and from Manzanillo about an hour north. Arrange the transfer through the house rather than self-driving a first arrival: the drivers know the road, the timing and the gate. Arriving in daylight is the comfortable default.
Once inside, the practical cautions are environmental — the Pacific swim is strong here, the sun is serious, and the nearest full hospital is some distance away, which is worth knowing if anyone in the party has a medical condition.
